The oft-quoted adage of “find a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” has truths rooted in the rich history of Pettinaro, founded in 1964 by forward-thinking Verino Pettinaro. Construction was never “just a job,” it’s truly his passion. And this passion was passed to his son Gregory, and daughters Tracy, Cindy, and Vicky.
The strong bonds of family make all of the difference, for not only is every Pettinaro project constructed as though it were being built for a member of the Pettinaro family, it is the strength of this family that has drawn accolades, raising Pettinaro to the pinnacle of its industry.
Following the example set by his father, Gregory Pettinaro, as CEO, now leads the Pettinaro team, which includes more than one hundred individual entities, encompassing in-house construction, architectural and real estate departments; as well as design, development, leasing and property management groups. Headquartered in a newly-expanded corporate site in Newport, Delaware, Pettinaro currently employs over 200 people and owns more than 4 million square feet of office, retail, industrial and residential properties in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida.
The firm’s success today belies its humble beginnings. Not long after Verino founded his small construction company in the sixties, he found a niche in the commercial construction market. Taking on jobs such as building schools, a post office, an addition to the University of Delaware library, and renovating the Wilmington Train Station, Pettinaro began to garner a presence. This profile increased when Verino built a town home community at the former Wilmington General Hospital site. He also purchased and developed what is now known as Greenville Place, a town home and apartment community in an upscale Wilmington neighborhood.
One of Pettinaro’s major feats was the foresight to buy 86 acres on the Christina riverfront in the 80′s, part of a former shipyard industrial site. Since then, Pettinaro has emerged as the principal developer along with the Riverfront Development Corporation, transforming the Wilmington Christina riverfront area into a beautiful and active destination for the City of Wilmington. Other Pettinaro projects on the Riverfront include: the Chase Center on the Riverfront; the conversion of a former shipyard structure into a modern Class-A 60,000 s.f. office building; Christina Crescent, a 270,000 s.f. office building for Barclays Bank, which includes a retail center, parking garage, and public park; and more.
The creation of The Pointe at Brandywine Park is the pièce de résistance in the Pettinaro portfolio. Just outside the city limits, and overlooking the beauty of the Brandywine River, The Pointe’s unparalleled location in a mile-long park provides privacy and tranquility, yet with access to everything. Every home at The Pointe provides spacious open floor plans with optimal natural light, and amenities that redefine the word “luxury.”
Verino continues to be active in the daily operations of the Pettinaro companies together with his son, as Gregory continually increases Pettinaro’s large property portfolio, leading Pettinaro into the next generation.
